Kent Grand Plus Review 2021

Purification Process of Kent Grand Plus

Kent Grand Plus comes with all the three main water purification technologies – RO, UV and UF along with a TDS controller.

Purification involves 7 steps which includes five steps of filtration, one step of UV disinfection and one step involves TDS regulation.

Now let’s take a look at each step of purification in detail.

RO purification with TDS Controller

Stage 1 – Sediment Filter

Sediment filter is responsible for filtering visible impurities which settle at the bottom of the filter in form of sediment. Hence, the name – Sediment filter.

Sediment filter filters out larger impurities such as sand, dust, dirt and so on. This is necessary because such impurities prevent efficient working of more advanced filters in further steps.

Stage 2 – Activated Carbon Filter

In the second stage of purification, water is passed through activated carbon filter. Activated carbon absorbs chlorine, chlorine by-products and organic impurities from water.

Municipal water is usually treated with chlorine for because of its disinfection properties. But sometimes, chlorine and its by-products can be in excess, which is not good. This is where activated carbon helps.

Also, activated carbon is good at absorbing organic impurities. Usually, these impurities are responsible for bad smell and taste. Thus, taste and smell of water is neutralized here.

Stage 3 – Ultrafiltration (UF)

In the third stage of purification, water is allowed to pass through a UF membrane. This is semi-permeable membrane with pore size of 0.01 microns ( 1 micron = 0.0001 cm). Size of a bacterium (pl. bacteria) is usually more than 0.5 microns, thus it can even filter out bacteria from water. So, UF membrane filters bacteria, some viruses and suspended solids.

Stage 4 – Reverse Osmosis (RO)

This water purification process involves RO membrane, which has minute pores of 0.0001 microns (0.1 nanometers).

Since, RO membrane’s pores are so small, water is passed with a good amount of force so that water molecules only water passes through it. This process traps all the dissolved salts, minerals and other very small impurities from the water such as harmful heavy metals like arsenic, mercury, pesticides etc. Since it filters even dissolved salts, it is ideal to purify hard water such as borewell water.

Stage 5 – TDS Controller

Fifth stage of filtration employs a TDS controller that regulates the amount of dissolved solids in the water. This is a necessary step in RO water purifiers because RO can filter essential elements. TDS controller mixes small amount of slightly impure water with RO purified water, thus adding back natural minerals and salts back into the water. This output water is healthier, safer and enriched with essential minerals.

Stage 6 – Ultraviolet Filtration (UV)

Once all the impurities are removed from water, it is passed through the UV chamber for UV purification. The UV chamber of Kent Grand Plus is made up of anodized aluminium that houses the UV lamp. UV filtration makes use of this 11 Watt UV lamp that produces UV-C radiation to deactivate harmful germs such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa etc.

Stage 7 – Post Carbon Filtration

The seventh stage of water purification involves post carbon filter which works as a polisher and it removes any remaining foul tase and smell from water.

Kent Grand Plus uses no chemicals for purification of water. This ensures 100% chemical-free water.

Physical Features

Kent brand is known more for purification rather than looks. Kent Grand Plus’ design is similar to many other Kent water purifiers with all the filters covered by a transparent cover on the top, while storage tank is at the bottom. Finally, a water dispensing tap is attached at the bottom of this tank.

This is a 9 litre water tank with water level indicators for ease of use. It is built from ABS food grade plastic, which is durable and does not leak chemicals unlike some poor quality plastics. Also, It is a wall mountable water purifier.

‘Zero Water Wastage’

RO water purifiers are known for wasting 65 – 75% water. This is a lot of water. To remove this limitation of RO purifiers, Kent Grand Plus has come up with Zero Water Wastage technology.

The rejected water is pumped back into the overhead water tank with the help of an internal pump. This rejected water mixes with water in the overhead tank and gets diluted, which you can use as normal tap water.

Please note that in theory, it is 0% water wastage but actual water wastage is around 50%.

In-Tank UV Disinfection

Kent Grand+ comes with in-tank UV disinfection feature. This prevents growth of microbes when the water is being stored inside the water tank. This is important because microorganisms can multiply when the water is being stored. In-tank UV disinfection safeguards from this microbial growth.

Water Tank

Kent Grand Plus is comes with a large 9 litre water tank which is made from good quality food grade plastic. 9 litres capacity is sufficient for most of the Indian households.

Purification Capacity

Purification capacity of this water purifier is 20 litres per hour. It means it will purify 1 litre every 3 minutes. This is high speed as compared to many other brands of RO.

Indicators

This water purifier comes with filter change alarm. This alarm notifies the user when it is time for replacement of RO membrane. Other than this, it has a water level indicator that is a calibration on the surface of water tank. When the water level is full, it means the water purifier can be switched off.

Auto Flushing System

Auto flush system in this RO purifier prevents scaling or damaging of the RO membrane by rapidly rinsing it. This technique washes away impurities and keeps the RO membrane clean. This, this process increases the life of RO membrane by preventing it from damaging effects of physical impurities such as dust and dirt.

Powerful UV bulb

Kent Grand Plus comes with a powerful UV lamp of 11 Watt. This is 37% higher wattage as compared to regular 8 Watt bulb UV lamp used in many water purifiers.

Push fit components

This water purifier comes with push fit components. It means that all the components inside the water purifier are assembles in a way that prevents any type of water leakage.

Built in SMPS

This water purifier comes with a built-in SMPS that prevents it from any damage from voltage fluctuations.

Maintenance cost

Kent Grand Plus comes with 5 filter and 1 UV bulb- Sediment filter, activated carbon filter, UF membrane, RO membrane, post carbon filter and one UV bulb. You will have to change this filters and UV bulb periodically.

Basic filters such as UF, activated carbon filter, post carbon filter and sediment filter will have to be change annually. These four filters will come in the range of 1000 – 1500 rupees.

RO membrane is the costliest among all the filters, but its life is between 1 and 3 years. Life of RO membrane depends on level of impurities in water and usage. You will be notified by the in-built alarm inside the purifier when the life of RO membrane ends.

The cost of the RO membrane is between 2,000 and 2,500 rupees.

Warranty

Kent Grand Plus has a warranty period of 1 year from the date of installation. This includes free repair and replacement of some filters. On top of it, there is free service for 3 years, which means that no extra charges will be taken for the visit. Please note that this information may change in future and it is important to read the terms and conditions thoroughly before buying.
